Moldkit is a passive air sampling kit designed specifically to detect airborne mold spores, fungal structures, and active mold growth in your home or indoor environment. With a Moldkit subscription, you receive a new kit every three months, giving you four mold air quality snapshots per year across every season. Rather than guessing at mold exposure based on a single test or visible surface growth, a quarterly subscription builds a continuous picture of what is actually suspended in the air you breathe, tracking how mold activity shifts with seasonal humidity, temperature changes, and moisture conditions throughout the year.
Indoor mold conditions are not static. Humidity rises in summer, condensation builds in winter, and moisture intrusion from rain or snowmelt can introduce new mold activity at any point in the year. A single mold test tells you what is in your air at one moment in time. Four tests per year tell you whether conditions are improving, worsening, or stable across every season, and whether remediation efforts, HVAC changes, dehumidification, or ventilation improvements are actually making a measurable difference to your air quality.
Moldkit identifies a wide range of airborne particles relevant to mold and overall air quality, including mold spores, fungal structures, plant debris, arthropod particles, animal particles such as hair, fur, and feather fragments, fibers and textiles, biological particles, indoor particulates from HVAC systems and scented products, and other unknown environmental particles. Because the analysis relies on direct microscopic examination rather than growth on a culture medium, Moldkit can identify many airborne mold species that would never be recovered through traditional culture based testing, including non-culturable species that simply do not grow on a petri dish.
Moldkit does not determine whether a mold spore is biologically alive. Instead, it identifies signs of active mold growth, such as colonization, hyphae, and reproduction, which indicate that mold is actively developing in the environment rather than sitting dormant. This distinction matters because active airborne growth is a stronger signal of a real moisture or air quality problem than the simple presence of inactive spore material.
Moldkit uses passive air sampling, meaning the sample collects mold spores and particles as they naturally move through the air, whether carried by wind, airflow, or normal indoor air circulation. This is fundamentally different from active air sampling methods that use a pump or vacuum to forcibly pull air into a collection device. Passive sampling reflects what a person actually breathes under normal conditions, without artificially concentrating particles or manipulating the collection environment, giving a more accurate, time averaged picture of the air in a given space.
Each Moldkit report identifies individual mold spores where possible and grades overall mold presence as high, medium, or low. Because some mold species look visually similar under a microscope, full growth analysis is sometimes needed to confirm an exact species. Reports use plain language rather than complex lab codes, so a result like identifying aspergillus with evidence of active growth, hyphae, and colonization present is easy to understand without a background in mycology or microbiology.
