Pollykit is a real time air sampling system that shows people exactly what they are breathing, not what a regional forecast predicts they might be breathing. The kit captures actual airborne particles, including pollen, mold spores, particulate matter, dust, and other debris, directly from the air in a specific location over a defined collection window. Once the sample is collected, it is sent in for lab analysis, where it is examined under a microscope, stained, photographed, and identified species by species. The result is a true picture of local air quality, not a generalized estimate based on data from a clinic miles or even regions away.
Pollykit offers both outdoor and indoor collection options, each suited to different goals.
Outdoor collection is designed to be a short window, typically capturing what is in the air over a 24 to 48 hour period. This shorter timeframe is ideal for patients trying to identify daily or trigger specific allergy responses, since it reflects real time conditions rather than averaged trends. For a broader view of what has been circulating in an area over several days, a longer collection period can be used instead, giving a fuller picture at the cost of pinpoint daily accuracy.
Indoor collection requires more time, generally around four days, since indoor air has less movement and lower concentrations of particles like mold spores. The longer window allows enough material to accumulate for accurate identification, especially in cases where mold exposure is suspected but airflow is limited.
When a sample reaches the lab, the collection tape is removed and mounted on a microscope slide. A staining process is applied to enhance visibility, and the sample is then examined directly. Findings are photographed and identified, giving patients and providers a documented, visual record of what was actually present in the air during the collection window.
Traditional pollen and allergen forecasts, like those found on widely used pollen tracking sites, rely on data submitted periodically from clinics scattered across a region. That data is used to generate broad seasonal trends, and results are often applied to entire metro areas or states even when local conditions vary dramatically. In Arizona, for example, Phoenix and Flagstaff have very different climates and allergen profiles, yet forecast sites frequently report nearly identical pollen levels for both. Sample placement plays a meaningful role in result accuracy. Outdoor samples should be hung roughly ten feet above the ground to minimize contamination from ground level dust, though results tend to remain reliable across a range of placements. The sample is rain resistant and has shown no signs of degradation from exposure to moisture.
Indoor samples should be placed in the specific area where an air quality concern is suspected, such as a bathroom for mold related issues. Indoor placements should avoid open windows to prevent outdoor air from skewing results, and should not sit directly in an HVAC airflow path, since this can artificially inflate particulate readings. Positioning near a return air vent, rather than a supply vent, tends to produce the most representative sample.
Keeping the collection tape protected from skin contact, paper fibers, and other inorganic material is essential for clean results. Improperly resealing the cover after exposure is one of the most common sources of sample contamination, which newer kit designs aim to solve with a built in protective cover.
