Meet the Mind Behind PollyKit

I've been treating allergy patients for over ten years. And for most of that time, I used public pollen reports the same way every other provider did — because that's just what you do. It's the data that exists, so you use it.

Early on, I wasn't even questioning it. I'd look at the regional counts, match them to what my patients were complaining about, and adjust treatment from there. Standard stuff. But after a few years, I started noticing something I couldn't explain: certain patients just weren't getting better when they should have been. The counts would be low, but they'd be miserable. Or the season would "end" according to the reports, and they'd still be struggling. I kept thinking it was something I was missing clinically. It took a while to realize the problem wasn't with my patients — it was with the data.

Once I started pulling on that thread, it unraveled pretty fast. Public pollen reports aren't tracking what's in the air right now. They're based on historical patterns — what's typically in the air this time of year. And they're not specific to where you live. In Arizona, where I practice, the entire state is covered by essentially one collection station. One.

Think about what that means in practice. So I Built Something

I wanted to see what was actually in my patients' air — not what a model predicted should be there. So I put together an inexpensive home air sampling system and started sending kits home with my Arizona patients. I wasn't sure what I'd find.

What stopped me in my tracks

Collection points just a few miles apart were showing completely different pollen and mold levels on the exact same day.

That was the moment things clicked. The patients who weren't responding to treatment weren't treatment failures — they were being dosed based on the wrong exposure data. Their neighborhood had completely different air than what the regional report was showing. Once I started treating based on their actual samples, I started seeing real improvement.

Then Mold Showed Up

I'll be honest — mold wasn't even on my radar when I started this. I was thinking about pollen. But as I processed more samples, I kept seeing it. Over and over, in homes where multiple people were sick but nobody was testing strongly positive for anything in particular.

I had families where two or three people were dealing with chronic allergy-type symptoms, and their standard allergy panels came back mild or moderate. Nothing dramatic. But when I tested their indoor air, the mold counts were high. That was the answer those families had been waiting for, sometimes for years.

Where This Goes
